SYR at the Worlds 2011
June 6th, 2011Once a year the best and brightest stars in Jiu Jitsu gather inside a large blue pyramid in Long Beach, CA to showcase their skills. The 2011 edition has concluded and SYR was there all four days to capture the action.
On Thursday, Blue belts took stage to show the future of our sport. The day once again belonged to Saulo & Xande Ribeiro prodigy Micheal Liera, working his way through a giant bracket and 7 fights to capture Gold. With a World title now on his resume, Micheal will set his eyes on continuing his success at Purple. Also at Blue, Jacob Sandoval of Alliance, now tutored by Cobrinha, capped off an equally impressive campaign to capture Gold at Featherweight. Mike Carbullido had a strong showing at Middle Heavy, falling in a tough semi finals match to capture Bronze. Look for all of these kids to continue their success for years to come.
At Purple, SYR took the lighter divisions by storm. Roosterweight Joao Rodrigues started the division off by taking home Gold for Check Mat. At Featherweight, Dominic Damian knocked out Atos World Pro champion Denilson Bischilari to setup an SYR semi final with Renzo Gracie star Gianni Grippo, Gianni won on a close fight by advantage and then continued his reign on the Pena division besting Pedro Torres for a 2nd time this year to capture yet another World Championship.
In another dual podium finish, Lightweights & Alliance teammates Sinistro Iturallde and Chris Visentin closed out in impressive fashion, duplicating their feat from the World Pro. With Sinistro recieving his brown belt on the podium, the brown belt division is now on notice. Ultra Heavyweight Orlando Sanchez was also on his way to another SYR gold before being injured in the semi finals.
Brown Belt crowned 3 World Champions for SYR. At Lightweight, American Jordon Schultz from Alliance took home a Gold at Brown after doing the same in 2010 at Purple. Running through his division, the sky is the limit for this kid. After an impressive campaign at the World Pro, losing to Rodolfo Viera by only points, 20 year old Heavyweight Joao Gabriel Rocha from Soul Fighters captured his World Title, making it look easy along the way. Joao kept his momentum rolling by taking home the Bronze in the absolute division. Yuri Simoes, the 21 year old sensation from Check Mat fought through a tough Ultra Heavy division to carry Check Mat to Gold in the brown belt division. Each of these champions will look to continue their success at the black belt level for years to come.
In the main event, the Black Belts, Caio Terra put on a spectacular display of technique by submitting all his opponents until the finals against Bruno Malfacine. In a tough match, Caio lost on advantages. Surely, Caio will be back to meet with Malfacine in the near future. Samir Chantre, Lucas Leite, Clark Gracie, Antonio Carlos Jr, Palito, and Joao Assis all picked up medals in very impressive fashion. Each one of them was only points or advantages away from Gold. Closing out the day was Antonio Braga Neto with a well deserved Gold in the Ultra Heavy division. Look for Braga Neto to set his sights on an Absolute title next year. Shout outs to Ryan Hall, Luke Stewart, Sergio, Rafa, Flavio, Lucas Lepri, Esquisito, Leandro, Carlos Diego, Marcelino Freitas, Milton Bastos, Ian McPherson, Tony & Albert, and all the other boys who were in the mix as well.
