How did you get involved in bjj?

I had already been training/fighting in MMA and i had moved to American Top Team to focus on taking my game to the next level. In one of my first days there i put a gi on and loved it. I had heard it was so much different from no gi, but i felt a fairly easy transition to gi from no gi.

What is you favorite bjj story?

Pretty cliche. I saw UFC1 in 1993 my family had bought the event live on PPV and I saw Royce Gracie destroy everyone. From then on I became a fan of BJJ and always knew that one day I would practice the martial art.

Who are some of the people who have influenced you bjj?

Marcos “Parrumpinha” Da Matta
Ricardo Liborio
Marcelo Garcia

What is your favorite position and why?

I think open guard feet on hips or spider guard is probably my favorite solely for the ability to transition to other positions. I dont like to get stuck in any one spot with my game so having the option to go into any position i like and keep the game going plays to my advantage.

If you could start training all over again, what would you change in training routine and why?

I wouldve started training BJJ right off the bat. I think its important to have a base in MMA and my base was MMA.

How do you think competition helps your jiujitsu?

Competition is not for everyone, but I fully believe that in order to see the strengths of your game reach the next level. Competition is Important and can help one make strides in their game alot quicker.

Who are some people you have beat in competition in the past, in which you are proud of and why?

Jorge Gurgel is probably my most cherished victory(UFC 86). I was a purple belt at the time and really was governing alot of my own training. I ended up submitting the BJJ black belt beating him at his own game in the third round.

How has bjj helped and changed your life?

Well Bjj has helped me immensely. Jiu Jitsu is a big part of my MMA game and has given me many victories, and its because of these victories i have been able to support myself and make a living. BJJ in a way puts food on my table. Yet training in it for fun gives me a break of having to do all the wrestling, no gi, boxing, strength and conditioning, so i can constantly strive to make myself a better martial artist as well as a person.

What do you think is not stressed enough in order to better your game in grappling?

Training in the Gi.

What are your plans for the next 5-10 year?

I would like to have my continue to fight in the UFC, win both gi and no gi worlds at brown belt. receive black belt. open my own school. and one day become UFC champion. Also I would like to complete a full Ironman triathlon.

What are three things people may not know about you?

Im obsessed with the Ninja Turtles.
I played the violin for 2 years.
I Enjoy competing in Triathlons when i have the time.

shout out to Tapout, American Top Team, and IHP
