Everyday is a fight for something. Therefore, many obstacles that happen in life can relate directly to jiu jitsu. In many ways we are all born into the philosophy of jiu jitsu. It’s a matter of who chooses to put the time and effort to better themselves everyday… Day by day.

Summary about yourself:
I look at myself as a peace revolutionist. I believe jiu jitsu is my tool. The way I look at it, if everyone in the world did jiu jitsu, we would have no more negative conflict. Everyone would be at peace with themselves, therefore, everybody else as well. There would be no “ego” as we know it. There would be no fear. All there would be is self-confidence, respect, discipline, awareness, humility and the ability to look above and beyond yourself. More importantly, the ability to look past preconceived notions and to see things as they are, with the utmost clarity and realism. You would feel so good that all you want to do is give, share, love and appreciate. Isn’t that what it’s all about?
Jiu Jitsu everyday. One love. Keep it Real.
List of titles or accomplishments:
3x Gracie Worlds Champion
3x Gracie National Champion
2009 IBJJF Worlds Silver Medalist (Brown Belt Division)
2005 Gracie Open Champion
2003 Pan American Champion
How did you get involved in bjj?
For real? Lol.. Just playin. Obviously I was born into it. There isn’t much option when you’re born a Gracie lol… But fortunately I enjoyed it and stuck with it.
What is you favorite bjj story?
There are many… Let’s see… In the beginning when Helio and Carlos still lived together with all the kids under one roof it wasn’t always friendly and lovey-dovey. There was only one t.v for all the kids to share. Now imagine, if every kid wanted to watch their own show. Can you picture the chaos? You got a bunch a Gracie Jiu Jitsu animals in one room trying to change the channel to their show. Only one way to settle this in a Gracie house hold. Yes sir! You have to be tough and technical to come out on top of that one. Lol..
Who are some of the people who have influenced you bjj?
Of course my father, Relson Gracie. He taught me the true science of the art unlike anyone else. There’s also a couple others that have helped me as well like Rorion and Renzo Gracie. I thank all of them greatly for their time and consideration.
What is your favorite position and why?
The closed guard. It has more submission possibilities than any other position. If you’re not trying to finish the fight, what are you doing?
If you could start training all over again, what would you change in training routine and why?
Nothing. Everything is the way it is because it’s supposed to be that way. All the good and the bad has lead me to where I am right now. I’m very proud to say that.
How do you think competition helps your jiujitsu?
My Grandfather, Helio, loved competition. My father loves competition. And now, I love competition. In those moments is when you see the person for who they really are, inside and out. They say the mats never lie. I believe.
Who are some people you have beat in competition in the past, in which you are proud of and why?
I don’t put to much value behind that because it doesn’t matter. In competition anything can happen to anyone. It’s not beating some one else that gives that sensation of accomplishment. It’s beating my own self, my own demons that make me feel amazing and alive.
How has bjj helped and changed your life?
OMG! I could go on forever on this one. A long story short, Jiu Jitsu is my life. Everything I do revolves around my jiu jitsu. But I think the biggest factor is that Jiu Jitsu gave me something to focus on. Something to work for. And something to believe in.
What do you think is not stressed enough in order to better your game in grappling?
I think staying humble is a big factor. How can a person learn something new when they already know it all? Patience is another one. The ability to withstand and endure the ups and downs that come with the sport. Last but not least, do research and find an academy with a credible instructor that comes from a legitimate source.
What are your plans for the next 5-10 years?
Jiu Jitstu everyday. I’m looking forward to these upcoming years. I feel my body doing things it’s never done before and I believe I’ll keep improving myself for years to come. Sky is the limit.
What are three things people may not know about you?
I like yoga, I love a good mafia movie, and I hear I’m quite the ladies man… But I’m married so that doesn’t matter.
Any shout outs?
Shout out to my mom and dad. Thank you for giving me life and simple day to day knowledge. Thanks to all my training partners of the past, present, and future. Without you guys none of this would be possible. And last but definately not least, thanks to Shoyoroll for supporting me with their sick jiu jitsu wear for Rebels Against the Mainstream.
One Love,
Rhalan Gracie (Team Relson Gracie)
