Finding Your Fit in the World of BJJ Kimonos

Sizing in jiu-jitsu isn’t one-size-fits-all — and it’s definitely not as simple as small, medium, or large. With different body types, training goals, and brand cuts, finding the right gi size can feel like solving a riddle in a foreign language.

Let’s make it simple.

Understanding Gi Size Codes

Most BJJ brands, Shoyoroll included, use the A-sizing system: A0, A1, A2, and so on. “A” stands for “Adult” (there’s also “F” for female cuts and “M” for kids). The number reflects general height and weight brackets.

But here’s the thing — not every A2 fits the same across brands. Our A2 isn’t their A2. Why? Because we cut ours with intention: athletic, tailored, ready to roll.

The Shoyoroll Size Chart

Our sizing blends classic fit logic with refined cut engineering. Every size is based on real-world jiu-jitsu bodies, not fashion models or generic sport templates.

For example:

  • A1 is typically ideal for athletes around 5’4”–5’8” and 125–155 lbs

  • A2 fits 5’8”–6’0”, 155–190 lbs

  • A3 goes from 6’0”–6’3”, 190–225 lbs

…but it depends on your build. Broad shoulders? Long legs? Short torso? The fit can shift.

Need More Flex? We Got You.

Some drops include in-between sizes like A2H (A2 height, A3 weight) or L variants (longer limbs). These hybrid sizes are ideal for athletes with specific proportions — no more compromising on sleeve length or pant rise.

You’ll also find F-sizes in select collections, tailored specifically for the female frame — adjusted proportions in the jacket and pants for better anatomical accuracy.

Preshrunk — But Not Static

Our gis come preshrunk, but cotton always moves a little. You’ll lose around 3–5% with regular washing — less if you’re hang-drying and not cooking them in the dryer.

When in Doubt, Check the Chart

Every product page on shoyoroll.com has a detailed size breakdown. If you’re still unsure, our team can help match your measurements to the right size based on your training goals.

What to Avoid

  • Don’t size up thinking you’ll shrink it down perfectly — too risky

  • Don’t size down just to “look sharper” — mobility matters more

  • Don’t rely on someone else’s fit — two people in the same size can feel totally different in the same gi

A gi that fits right becomes part of your game. You stop thinking about it — and that’s the point.
